Syrian Uprising 2011 Information Centre: Assad is clearly in a threatening mood today. Threatening the world with ten Afghanistans during his interview wasn’t enough. His support page on Facebook is announcing there will soon be a massive military operation to finish off the struggle in Homs. No efforts at negotiation or dialogue – just “reforms”, similar to the reforms in Hama in 1982. This is how Homs looks today – the funeral of 6 martyrs in Bab Amru.

4 days ago, the Arab League team asked Assad for a clear road map for an end to violence and the start of reforms. Though the official answer will be discussed today in Doha the practical answer is already known. There are names of at least 4,000 martyrs since 18 March. While the international community, Arab League and the gang of Assad are “busy” negotiating, everyday Syrians are busy attending funerals of their martyrs. This is the funeral of Khaled Wahba in Kafr Batna, Damascus today.

 Kafr Batna 30/10/2011

British Syrians & Friends in Solidarity with the Syrian RevolutionStudent & schools in Deir el-Zour have been told to come to school wearing normal clothes instead of their school uniforms on Tuesday. Their plan is to organise a ‘spontaneous’ protest for the criminal assad. Parents have been warned not to send their children to school on that day. The regime is hell bent on trying to drum up fake support because the real level of support they have is so low.
Summary of events in Hama, on 30 Oct 2011:
Since the early hours, there was intensive gunfire in Kafr Zita [Rural Hama]. Then after noon prayers 1,000s of Kafr Nabouda [another town in Hama’s rural] took part in the funeral procession of Mahmoud Qamiro, who was killed by the regime’s gangs.
Unprecedented heavy presence of security forces in the city of Hama; security forces set up more checkpoints-barricades and all cars were subjected to extensive inspections.
Students’ demonstrations and regime forces’ response:
A quick students’ demonstration was held in Al-Karama neighborhood, the demonstration called for the execution of the president and chanted in solidarity with wounded Homs. In Al-Qusour neighborhood, after school, students from Samir Sawwaf middle school held a demonstration, and security forces arrested one of the children-students. Demonstrations also issued from the schools of Khalid Samak and Haitham Asaya, security forces faced these demonstrations with teargas causing asphyxia cases between the children-students.
Since the early hours, security forces conducted a savage campaign on the schools in the neighborhood of Gharb Al-Mashtal, terrorizing school children, insulting, harassing and bullying them. Security forces also used profanities and insults against all of the neighborhood’s residents because of the pro-revolution phrases written on the walls, residents were forced to cover the writings, note that all the phrases were signed by the “Spray man” [Young men wearing masks and writing on the walls pro-revolution phrases, they are called “Spray men”; it is a phenomenon in the revolution taking place all over Syria, these young men could face torture and death if they are caught by the regime].
In Al-Baiad neighborhood, students’ demonstrations issued from the schools of Ibn Khaldoun and Tashrin. Some students from the school of Uthman Al-Hourani in the neighborhood of Aleppo-road distributed leaflet calling for civil disobedience for a week starting same day, 30 Oct.
Large demonstrations took place in rural Hama in the towns of Taibat Al-Imam, Morak, Khattab, and Halfaya. In Suran, students of Rakan Salem high school held a set-in under the banner of “Set-ins till the regime falls”, during the set-in, security agents raided the students and arrested 3 of them, angering the rest of the students who then went immediately in a tour for all of the schools and tore down the pictures of the tyrant [meaning Bashar Al-Assad] from principles’ offices. The rebel heroes of Suran sent the following message to security forces: If the detained students are not released within the hour, we will respond in action and not in words. Security forces were forced, under pressure, to release the students.
Regime forces violence and people’s position:
The army and Shabiha (regime-sponsored gangs) stormed the countryside of Hama; a huge military campaign of more than 30 vehicles full of security and Shabiha elements stormed the villages of Khunaizir [Khnezir] and Al-Jelma [Jalama].
And in Al-Sqilbiya, security, Shabiha (regime-sponsored gangs), and army forces with around 30 vehicles stormed the city of Al-Sqilbiya along with a raid campaign.

A general strike took place everywhere in Kernaz town in mourning of martyrs.

During the evening, many demonstrations were held in the neighborhoods of Al-Jarajmeh, Al-Sharqiya, Al-Hamidiya, Al-Qusour, and Aleppo-road.
Despite the threats by regime forces, a large demonstration was held in Kafr Zita, condemning, in resentment, the Arab League, and chanting in solidarity with Homs; saying that “We are with you till death.” Demonstrations were also held in Taibat Al-Imam, Morak, and Al-Twina.

President Assad: We count on the continuation of the Russian position in support of SyriaSyrian President Bashar al-Assad Sunday, 30/10/2011, he is counting on the continuation of the Russian position in support of Damascus and the proposal to maintain the stability of the world. Assad said in a TV interview aired by Channel One Russia on Sunday night, “Syria is counting on Russia, with which it has historic ties” , stressing the role of Russia is very important since the early days of the crisis by constant communication with the Russian government, and added that he briefed Russian friends in detail on the course of events. and Assad stressed that Syria is betting on Russia’s support for his country, and contribute to strengthening stability in the world. The President Assad to Russia has played an important role in the international arena and this was obvious in the use of the veto in the UN Security Council and explained that this situation stems from the knowledge of the dangers of political or military interference in the internal affairs of Syria.

BBC: Syria’s President Assad warns of an “earthquake” if the West intervenes in his country, where 3,000 people have died in the unrest since March.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has warned of an “earthquake” if the West intervenes in his country.
In a rare interview with the UK’s Sunday Telegraph newspaper, Mr Assad said involvement risked transforming Syria into “another Afghanistan”.

His comments came after the UN secretary-general made a new call for the repression to end.

At least 50 civilians and members of the security forces were killed on Saturday, according to the two sides.

Activists said 21 civilians were killed and that army tanks had shelled a historic district in the city of Homs.

The government said 20 soldiers had been killed in Homs, and 10 members of the security forces killed during an ambush of their bus in Idlib province.

More than 3,000 people have died in the unrest since protests calling for the government of Mr Assad to step down broke out in March. In the Sunday Telegraph interview, Mr Assad said Western countries “are going to ratchet up the pressure, definitely”.

“Syria is the hub now in this region. It is the faultline, and if you play with the ground you will cause an earthquake,” he said, .

“Any problem in Syria will burn the whole region. If the plan is to divide Syria, that is to divide the whole region.

“Do you want to see another Afghanistan, or tens of Afghanistans?”

President Assad admitted that “many mistakes” had been made by his security forces in the early part of the uprising, but the paper said he insisted that “only terrorists” were now being targeted.

He said he had responded differently to the Arab Spring than other, deposed Arab leaders.

“We didn’t go down the road of stubborn government,” he said. “Six days after (the protests began), I commenced reform.

Mr Assad described the uprising as a “struggle between Islamism and pan-Arabism.

“We’ve been fighting the Muslim brotherhood since the 1950s and we are still fighting with them,” he said.

The latest statement from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Mr Assad must respond to demands for change with serious reform, “not repression and violence”, and called for an immediate halt to military operations.

His calls echo those of members of the Arab League who on Friday sent an “urgent message” to the Syrian government, denouncing “the continued killings of civilians” taking part in protests.

The League’s ministerial committee on the Syrian crisis also urged Damascus to “take the necessary measures” to protect civilians.

Soldiers killed

On Saturday, two of the country’s main activist groups, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Co-ordinating Committees, said shells slammed into the Baba Amr district of Homs.

Reuters news agency reported one person was shot dead by a sniper and two were killed during machinegun fire between Mr Assad’s forces and defectors in the city. Activists said that 21 civilians had been killed on Saturday, including 12 in Hama and three in Homs.

Raids and arrests also were reported around the eastern city of Deir el-Zour, the Associated Press reports.

In another incident near Homs, up to 20 Syrian soldiers were killed and 53 wounded in clashes with presumed army deserters, according to Agence France Presse.

In a separate incident, 10 security agents and a deserter were killed in a bus ambush near the Turkish border, AFP reported, quoting activists.

The Observatory said the bus was transporting security agents between the villages of Al-Habit and Kafrnabuda in Idlib province when it was ambushed “by armed men, probably deserters”.
