It is difficult to conduct an opinion poll in a country like Syria, but it is easy to say that less than ten percent of Syrians were following the vote on the Western draft resolution regarding Syria, in the Security Council. While the eyes of the society most associated with the movement of change were directed towards Damascus and Aleppo, the wider humanitarian and survival situation for the society did not even allow people to keep track of the media. One revolutionary in Daraa province said to me on his satellite mobile phone: “I have seen in recent weeks cases of amputation of the hand and foot more than fifteen times, because of the absence of specialist surgeons and places worthy of the name ‘surgery’. We lack doctors, we lack medicine and we lack food. Indiscriminate shelling around us has made us inevitable creatures of death. Me as a fighter, I have chosen this for myself, but the number of fighters compared to the total number victims is less … not because they are cowards, but because the shelling is blind and is designed more to terrorise people than to face the insurgents. The human being is the cheapest thing in Syria today; food and energy like gas and diesel are rare and are absent completely from some areas; people cut trees and use dried animal dung for cooking food; the price of ammunition is mythical, and medicine is increasing in price; human beings are the only cheaply price commodity. I tried to pass some news to the Gulf satellite channels, but it seems that the issue is not important for them. They want news to fit their media’s policy; they are looking for a massacre. We as human beings have not been slaughtered yet; we no longer deserve even a small report about our situation.” Read more

Syria is experiencing the most dramatic crisis in its history. The option for a military solution, which does not take into account the revolt’s calls for the freedom and dignity of the Syrian people, has led to the spread of violence, the loss of too many human lives and generalized destruction
Gathered in Rome at the Community of Sant’Egidio, we who belong to various groups of the Syrian democratic opposition, active both inside and outside the country, address this appeal to the Syrian people, to all sides involved and to the international community

What is happening in Syria cannot be taken in isolation. The protracted upheaval in one of the Middle East’s biggest, most powerful and most influential countries is affecting the entire region and, most critically, its immediate neighbours.
Like Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon Turkey has already absorbed – almost without hesitation – thousands of Syrians fleeing the fighting, in particular from the northern cities of Hama and Aleppo. Read more

Protests continue over the Kurdish area in Syria.
…
“We cannot accept Syria being transformed into a theatre of regional and international conflict. We believe the international community has the strength and the necessary ability to find a consensus that would be the basis of a political solution to the current dramatic crisis, based on the imposition of a ceasefire, the withdrawal of the military, the release of detainees and the kidnapped, the return of refugees, emergency assistance for the victims, a real global negotiation that excludes no one and a process that would be completed with real national reconciliation based on justice”.
