Human Rights Watch identified the locations of and provided details about 27 secret torture facilities run by Syrian Intelligence agencies, analyzing evidence from former detainees and military defectors as well as satellite imagery.

Security forces in detention centers scattered across Syria often used the same torture methods, clearly indicating that torture is a state policy, and, therefore, a crime against humanity.

“They forced me to undress,” a former detainee from Syria’s Idlib Central Prison said. “Then they started squeezing my fingers with pliers. They put staples in my fingers, chest, and ears. They used electric stun-guns on my genitals twice.”
