Syrian Uprising 2011 Information Centre: 42 Martyrs have fallen today – each one of them had a life, family and friends, and dreams of living in a free Syria. The Arab League delegation has given Assad at least two more weeks to kill as many as he wants – maybe not a surprise because it is the League of Arab dictators who have never represented the Arab people. However, Syrians continue to ask for protection from the regime’s violence – the street protests clearly supported the idea of ??a No Fly Zone to stop the planes transporting weapons and to prevent him using his air force to bomb the Syrian Free Army. Syria – Friday 28/10/2011Homs (28/10/2011): This is Baba Amro in Homs, this area has seen some of the heaviest repression and terror during the last 7 months. Just today they have lost at least 9 martyrs. They are chanting “Bashar stop howling, the people want a No Fly Zone”.
Here are some of the martyrs (GRAPHIC)
Homs (28/10/2011): This is the son of Ahmad Kujeq who was one of at least 30 who have been martred today (21 in Homs). As you can see in this video he didn’t cry, neither for the death of his father nor from the pain of his injuries. Another child who, because of Assad, will have to take on the responsibilities of a man.
UPDATE (28/10/2011): Today is the Friday of the No Fly Zone. Syrians have been demanding this for weeks in order to stop the arms supply to Assad, to protect themselves from his helicopters and aircrafts. They also think it will increase the likelihood of army defections because they will not be in danger of air attack. This video from Herak in Daraa province. “The people want a no fly zone.” At least 13 martyrs have fallen so far – mostly in Hama and Homs.
“” If the Arab League’s initiative is going to have any chance of success, it needs to guarantee that civilians will be protected. The only way to make sure civilians are protected is to have on-the-ground monitors whose presence would inhibit abuse by the security services. “

First, we should remind ourselves that our martyrs are not just numbers or a publicity tool, they are the greatest on the face of the Earth, sacrificing selflessly their blood so we can reach a noble life of freedom. Our sons’ wounds, the detention of our brothers, the harm our young men see, and the torture our freedom heroes receive is not just for publicity, it is a wound in the conscience of our nation, and an incentive for us to continue, defend, support, and help. So please, honor the blood of the martyrs, and know that victory is ours. So let us keep our promise to staying the course, patience, victory, and forgiveness.Like every night, the sounds of gunfire and explosions were heard in most neighborhoods. Things were also tough in Al-Khaldiyeh, where a lot of nail bombs were launched from armored vehicles. In Deir Balba, heavy artillery was used to demolish the neighborhood. Things were also tough in Karm Al-Zeitoun, Al-Nazeheen, Jib Al-Jandali, Baba Amro (where there were many injured who were impossible to attend to because of the heavy gunfire and siege of the neighborhood), Bab Al-Sbaa, Al-Waar (where there were violent clashes in the military academy), Bab Al-Draib (where Kaab Al-Ahbar mosque was targeted), Al-Inshaat, and Joret Al-Shayah. The same was true for the towns of Talbiseh, Al-Qusayr, and Al-Rastan.Demonstrations went out even though the Assad forces surrounded many mosques, threatened to arrest the Imams, and fired during and after prayer, as happened in Al-Qusayr and many mosques in Homs like Bilal Al-Habashi mosque on the Damascus road, Omar Bin Al-Khatab mosque, and many others.News arrived about intense shelling of Al-Bayada with heavy artillery and tanks amid confirmed news of defection of many soldiers, who burned the military vehicles they had before they fled seeking shelter with the residents. Many mourners of martyr Taher Jamrak in Al-Qusayr were threatened and targeted by Lt. An armored vehicle entered Bab Al-Sbaa and fired hysterically. In addition, the air force intelligence checkpoint in Tal Kalakh opened fire at homes, cars, and demonstrators returning, but no injuries were reported.Firing continued from the checkpoints, armored vehicles, and tanks stationed at the checkpoints towards the neighborhoods. Heavy artillery demolished Baba Amro and Bab Al-Sbaa, where columns of fire and smoke were seen rising from some places in the neighborhood, and all residents could do was to chant for God. Gunfire resumed inside the military academy in Al-Waar, without getting any news from there, except ambulances carrying injured people. Some military trucks and tanks were also seen wandering some neighborhoods or on main roads like Nizar Qabbani street towards Al-Ghouta and Tripoli road towards Al-Inshaat and Baba Amro. A huge explosion was heard in Al-Inshaat after a period of gunfire, and residents chanting God’s name in response. Residents of Al-Waar also heard heavy gunfire from the police station and the neighborhood’s checkpoints. In Talbiseh, checkpoints and tanks that support them fired rockets and machine guns towards Al-Masjer Al-Janoubi neighborhood. BBC: Syria protesters call for no-fly zone
At least 37 people have been killed in crackdowns during protests calling for the downfall of the government held across Syria after Friday prayers. The deaths took place mostly in Homs and Hama as protesters called for a no-fly-zone to be imposed, activists said.
Despite the threat of violence, at least 170 protests took place on Friday, the traditional day of protest.
More than 3,000 people have died in the unrest since protests broke out in March.
Protesters said those killed on Friday included an 80-year-old man shot near Homs, as well as a young boy near Deraa, in the south.
Young demonstrators
Protesters called for international protection from Nato whose war planes played a vital role in the overthrow of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
“God, Syria, we want a no-fly zone over it,” protesters shouted in the Bab Tadmur neighbourhood of Homs, while others carried banners demanding international protection, Reuters reports.
In the restive Balaa neighbourhood, around 20,000 people marched calling for the fall of President Assad’s regime, Agence France Presse reports, quoting the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
An armed insurgency has emerged over the past few weeks around the city, home to one million people and some 85 miles (140km) north of Damascus, the news agency reports.
In the capital, footage posted on the internet appeared to show a crowd of hundreds swaying and singing in a traditional dance whose lyrics had been adapted to become a protest song, Reuters reports.
Dozens of young protesters marched in the capital’s Barzeh neighbourhood, the Observatory said, adding that 40 were arrested.
Internet and communications services were reportedly disrupted in parts of Damascus, as well as in Homs.
‘Looting’
Concerns are mounting as what began as a peaceful protest movement has become increasingly armed as soldiers have defected to the opposition.
The Syrian government insists the unrest is being stoked by armed gangs and foreign extremists looking to stir up sectarian strife.
Syrian state media said that what it called “armed gangs” had attacked the main police station in Homs and that gunmen had shot dead a young boy and an old man.
They said security forces had captured a number of armed men and seized quantities of weapons and ammunition.
Foreign journalists have been largely prevented from reporting from the country, making it difficult to confirm events on the ground.
On Wednesday, envoys from six Arab League nations – Qatar, Egypt, Algeria, Oman, Sudan, Yemen – arrived in Damascus to hold what were described as “frank and friendly” talks with President Assad.
The visit followed a call by the group for talks between the Syrian government and opposition forces to take place within 15 days.
The talks are scheduled to resume on Sunday, either in Damascus or in Qatar.
But a spokeswoman for the opposition Syrian National Council (SNC), said it was “impossible” to talk about dialogue as the crackdown continued.
Analysis
Jim MuirBBC News, BeirutOpposition groups were calling it “the Friday of the air embargo”, underlining their call for outside intervention to protect civilians, especially now that the Libyan conflict has been resolved.
But Damascus still seems able to count on powerful international protectors.
A senior Chinese envoy, currently visiting Syria, was quoted as saying Beijing would, if necessary, once more veto any resolution at the UN Security Council that might open the way for mandatory sanctions or outside intervention in Syria.
Both Russia and China vetoed a western-sponsored resolution on Syria earlier this month.

Reuters: Syrian security forces kill 40 protesters on Friday
Security forces killed at least 40 civilians on Friday in attacks on demonstrations calling for international protection for Syria’s pro-democracy protesters, activists said.
Most of the killings were in the main cities of Hama, where the security presence has been heavy since a military assault two months ago, and in Homs, where the army and militiamen loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have been raiding residential districts to put down protests and a nascent armed insurgency.
