swedish flagSKSRescind the death sentence against the Kurdish activists!  Developments in Iran since the election in June 2009 have been changeble.  In the Kurdish area in which a state of emergency exists, the Iranian regime has grown even more repressive. The Kurdish people have the highest number of death row political prisoners.

In Iran, there are currently thirteen Kurdish students, and civil and political activists awaiting death sentences that have been issued by Iran’s judiciary. They are accused of threatening national security or being an “enemy of God”, and so for being a dissident.

One of the latest victims was 27-year-old Kurdish political activist Ehsan Fatahiyan who was hanged on November 11, 2009 for the crime of having been a member of a Kurdish opposition group.  The Islamic Republic calls it “moharebeh” ie. battle against God.

Hundreds of other Kurdish prisoners, human rights activists and dissidents in prison on charges of threatening national security and being “enemies of God” went on a solidarity hunger strike against the unjust death sentences. According to the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) there are 227 Kurdish activists, educators and journalists imprisoned on the basis of vague evidence. All have been denied effective representation for their defence, and all have been sentenced to death or to long prison terms.

We, the signatories call for Iran to abolish the death sentence against the Kurdish militants immediately. We hereby ask that the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt to push Iran to ser aside the death sentence.

This call will be submitted to the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, and the Iranian Embassy on January 15 2010.
