Syrian Uprising 2011 Information Centre: SUMMARY (17/05/2012): At least 23 martyrs have fallen today. Assad’s forces continue to shell many towns and cities including Rastan and al-Houla near Homs, besieged al-Herak in Daraa province and Daraya and Duma, 2 of the largest suburbs of the capital. In Duma a whole family was killed when a shell hit their house. Meanwhile, the leader of the SNC, Burhan Ghalioun, has bowed to pressure and annoucned he will step down once a replacement has been found. See the map for more info: Google map Read more

Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: Urgent! Rastan being violently bombarded - Homs province: The assault on Rastan has resumed, after a lull for 3 hours. 30 rockets have pounded Rastan in the last 10 minutes.
In the light of this ongoing assault, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights strongly urges the UN monitoring mission to head towards the city of Rastan, which the regime is gradually destroying. Read more

Syrian Uprising 2011 Information Centre: SUMMARY (15/05/2012): At least 73 martyrs have fallen today. Most of the martyrs fell in the massacre in Khan Shaykhun, and the regime also renewed it’s attack on Deir Ezzor city and an apartment building in Baniyas was bombed. Meanwhile there has been heavy shelling on Rastan and the villages around Qusayr where pro-Assad Lebanese have been involved in the fighting. Syrian Uprising 2011 Information Centre: SUMMARY (14/05/2012): Assad’s forces continue to show the extent of their commitment to the Annan plan by launching new invasions of Kafar Zita and Morek in Hama countryside while the FSA beat back another attack on Rastan. Meanwhile, Assad probably already wishes that Aleppo University didn’t reopen yesterday. Things are back to how they were before the 10 days closure, with large protests on campus and students being tear gassed, beaten and detained by the regime’s thugs. Syrian Uprising 2011 Information Centre: SUMMARY (13/05/2012): At least 29 martyrs have fallen today. The worst incident was the massacre in Tamana’ah village in Hama province, where Assad’s thugs killed 9 residents, including 3 women, and burned the village mosque. Rastan is under heavy shelling while the UN observers left Qusayer after they were shot at by Assad’s forces. Three Kurds and an Arabic woman were killed on 9 May on Aleppo by Shabiha and were buried yesterday- 10 May – in Afrin, Ahmed Osman, Batal Abdo, and Ahmad Kocher. The Arabic woman was Amina Deyab. More than 150,000 went to the funeral.
Fifteen Kurds were kidnapped by Shabiha and intelligence security on 9 May 2012 as they traveled from Afrin to Aleppo. Shabiha and security are pushing for ethnic fighting between Arabs and Kurds. Firat News Agency. Read more

Secretary-General condemns bomb attack near UN observer convoy in Syria: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has condemned a bomb explosion which occurred in the vicinity of a convoy of UN observers in Syria, injuring several Syrian soldiers accompanying the delegation, Mr. Ban’s spokesperson said today.
The observers, part of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS), were on their way from Damascus for a visit to the southern city of Dar’a, under Syrian army escort. They had crossed a military checkpoint on the road approaching the town when the improvised explosive device detonated, shortly before midday today. Read more
